he University of Ioannina (UoI) is the third oldest public Greek University. It has been at the forefront of teaching and research in Greece for over 50 years. It has one of the largest campuses in the country, spanning across three cities in the Region of Epirus. Undergraduate students in the University of Ioannina are admitted on the basis of their performance at national level entrance examinations that are held by the Hellenic Ministry of Education.

UoI is organized in 11 Schools, (i) Philosophy, (ii) Sciences, (iii) Health Sciences, (iv) Education, (v) Economics and Administrative Sciences, (vi) Fine Arts, (vii) Engineering, (viii) Social Sciences, (ix) Music Studies, (x) Informatics and Telecommunications and (xi) Agriculture and offers 23 Undergraduate Courses of Study through its Academic Departments as well as 33 Postgraduate Study Programmes in most of its Academic Departments.

UoI has always given priority to high standards in all facets of the academic “pallet”, including teaching, learning and research. In particular, research excellence in climate and environmental issues, substantial contributions to medical research and important work on literal and intellectual heritage along with good practices in education and school interventions have been at the heart of the mission of UoI.

UoI has developed some strong links with the local community and economy such as the Regional University Hospital of Ioannina, the Science and Technology Park of Epirus and the Model Agri-food Technological Park of Epirus. The bibliometric indices such as the total number of publications and citations per researcher and Professor reflect the institution’s commitment to producing high-quality research. The Research at UoI is based on three structural research pillars: the University Centre of Ioannina (U.R.C.I.) (with 6 Research Institutes: Biosciences, Environment & Sustainable Development, Material & Computing Science, Economic Analysis & Solidarity Economy, Humanities and Social Sciences, Digital Innovation), the Network of Research Supporting Laboratories and 200 Departmental Laboratories.

UoI has smoothly integrated into the social and cultural environment of Epirus. The museums that are housed within the university campus display exhibits that reveal local history and arts: Folklore Museum, Typography Museum, History of Medicine Museum, Maria and Spyros Malafouris (Ernanis) Library and Museum, Museum of Casts.The student organizations and the university facilities (Dining Hall, University Sport (Indoor Gym, Running Track and football grounds), Cultural Centre of Peristera Dourouti Monastery, University Library and Information Center, Computer Center and Network operation system, International Center of Hellenic of Education- Culture and Vocational Training, University Conference Center “Karolos Papoulias”, Center of Career Development & Employment ) in combination with the numerous multicultural events guarantee an academically rewarding study at the University of Ioannina.
